What is the difference between long-term and short-term capital gains?
Long-term gains (on assets held more than a year) get preferential 0%, 15%, or 20% federal rates. Short-term gains (held a year or less) are taxed as ordinary income at your regular bracket rates.
Do capital gains stack on top of my income?
Yes. Long-term gains are stacked above your ordinary taxable income, so the bracket they fall into depends on how much income you already have. Short-term gains add directly to your ordinary income.
